“From the very first notes the Resol Quartet had that special quartet sound,
much more than just four instrumentalists. As their third trip to Perth Chamber
Music expectations were high as shown by the absolute silence before they
began…. It (Shostakovich) was a devastating performance ending a triumphant season.

“The first, just looking at their programme, related to the amazing variety of string quartet styles they were raring to go and tackle. Tackle them they did and with resounding success… They had taken us with them all the way through so many of the composers thoughts and feelings, so varied and with so many undercurrents that it is hardly possible to pin them down. Nevertheless we had experienced an unequalled emotional adventure in music. So, well done the Resol Quartet!”

“The playing was very expressive, with nice use of vibrato and subtle rubato, and phrasing that suggested anguished breathing. Very moving… The dynamic balance was perfect and the moments of cheeky counterpoint were elegantly realised. The triple-time slow movement charmed with lovely cantabile playing and featured a nice duet between first violin and cello. The Resol Quartet really got under the skin of this profound music and delivered a performance as finely nuanced and impactful as I have heard, matching the description above in every detail. It would be a huge undertaking, but they should consider recording all 15 of the Shostakovich quartets. I’d buy it.”

“In the Resol’s capable hands it sparkled and shone with brilliance and intensity… A serious enterprise indeed for any ensemble to take on, and the Resols were unflinching in their resolve and commitment to its message; their musical accomplishment and maturity matched by an objective and unaffected approach to the job in hand. The result? A powerful and memorable performance.”

“The Resol Quartet gave a deeply considered account of this exacting but satisfying score, while at the same time being unafraid to approach the notes with a liberating degree of interpretative freedom”

“The varied dynamics, of which a good quartet is capable, are exploited fully, with delicate andante passages handled sensitively, while the allegro passages are attacked heartily, and all points in between…what the Brunton and its partners, and Resol String Quartet here, are doing, is marvellous, for chamber music and for us, while lockdown continues to quash live performance.”
